Does misery love company, or does misery make company equally miserable?
Misery loves company as in misery loves to surround itself with other miserable people. That’s why if someone is miserable and they run into somebody cheerful, who doesn’t succumb to their misery, it makes them feel peeved that they’re the only one suffering in such a state. However, if they bring another down to their level, they feel vindicated and less alone.
