Does Memphis Need a New, New Bridge? Thursday May 21, 2009 I was reading an article in the The Commercial Appeal this morning about the startling number of stalled car-related fatalities on the Hernando-DeSoto Bridge (a.k.a. the New Bridge) in the last few years. In most of these cases, a car breaks down and is steered to the side of the road. But because the shoulders of the bridge are only two feet wide, the cars may still be in the way of oncoming traffic. It has been determined that it would be impossible to widen the shoulders of the New Bridge so a new new bridge has been proposed that would have both emergency lanes and wider shoulders. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Unfortunately, the new, new bridge would come with a $1 billion price tag. So is it worth it? Should tax payers foot the bill for a project of this magnitude? Ar
