Does Markham conduct lead testing of municipal drinking water?
Lead seldom occurs naturally in water supplies like rivers and lakes. Lead is almost never present in water leaving a treatment plant or travelling through watermains. The drinking water distributed by the Town of Markham is tested annually at 19 locations throughout the Town. In 2006, lead concentrations were found to be zero within the distribution system. The next scheduled testing of the distribution system is May 28, 2007. What are the next steps? While Markham was not one of the 36 municipalities recently required by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to take additional samples for lead detection, Markham is responding to the Ministry’s earlier request for municipalities to take additional representative samples for the Ministry’s information. Where would I go to have my water tested? What certification do I look for? For an evaluation of lead levels in the pipes inside your home, the Town recommends that residents arrange water testing by an accredited, licensed laboratory.
