Does low iron cause bloody stools?
Any kind of bleeding from the intestines is a very serious issue and your husband should see a doctor. Low iron doesn’t cause bleeding; low iron does interfere with the body’s ability to make new blood cells. Bleeding from hemorrhoids is usually bright red. The further up the digestive tract the bleeding is (in general) the darker the blood will be. That’s because the blood in the intestines gets partially digested as it goes through. Dark red blood could indicate he has an ulcer in his stomach, small intestine, or large intestine. He should have tests done to locate the cause and stop the bleeding. Although I don’t mean to scare you, it’s also possible this could be cancer, so please schedule him for a doctor’s appointment at once. In fact, if the bleeding is very heavy, take him straight to the ER. He should absolutely avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen, or drinking carbonated or caffeinated beverages. This is NOT something to ignore; he needs to be seen right away.
