Ron Artest now has a perfectly acceptable reason to justify his erratic behavior. He was loaded. The Los Angeles Lakers forward dropped the bombshell to the Sporting News that he used to down alcohol at halftime during games. “I used to drink Hennessy…at halftime,” he said for a story running in the magazine’s Dec. 7 edition. “I (kept it) in my locker. I’d just walk to the liquor store and get it.” While he’s presumably clean and sober these days, the Queensbridge product admitted to being under the influence of the cognac while he was a member of the Chicago Bulls from 1999-2002. But he didn’t tell the magazine whether he was blasted while playing for the Indiana Pacers when he infamously helped instigate an ugly brawl in Detroit that extended to the crowd. Artest was suspended for 73 games during the 2004-05 season for his role in the fight. He averaged 12, 11.9, and 10.9 points per game during his first three seasons in the league.
