Yes led lighting can generate heat. In fact, several types of high power led lights are designed to operate at high temperatures. The temperatures that high power leds are designed to operate within are from room temperature to over 160F – this temperature range is considered ‘warm’ when compared to hot running incandescent lighting. At OIC, we design our led lighting to operate close to 40F above room temperature – just warm to the touch. We use a multi led low power approach for our lighting – we do not like few led high temperature high power designs. Heat is the most important factor in determining the length of useful operating life of leds, and high heat designs can considerably shorten their life. In fact, some manufacturers of these few led high temperature designs have de-rated the operating life to 30,000 – 20,000 hours. A 20,000 hour decrease in expected operating life results in nearly twice the cost of led lighting expected to last 50,000 hours. We want our lighting to las
