Yes, turn the Wi-Fi off when you are not using it. The Iphone continually checks the status of the Wi-Fi signal. When traveling the Iphone will pickup signals and when you travel out of the range of that signal the Iphone searches for another and so on. The battery suffers from this so called tower jumping.
