Does Kasey Kahne have one foot out the RPM door?
That engine failure 67 laps into Sunday’s race certainly did little to solidify his long-term future with a team in total chaos. Kahne’s done a good job of staying above the fray by running well and grabbing a spot in the Chase. But he’s not the boy in the bubble, oblivious to all the drama surrounding his race team. Although he and crew chief Kenny Francis have done an outstanding job of closing the No. 9 team off from the behind-the-scenes turmoil, he was clearly not comfortable with the direction of the organization long before his 38th-place finish. Among the things Kahne admitted this weekend was: He doesn’t know who is running RPM, and he’s not real sure who to go to for answers. He’s grateful that Francis and his crew are able to focus on racing, and if not for Francis, “I’d be a mess,” Kahne said.
