You’re getting a lot of really bad answers from both sides of the aisle. The ‘mind control cults’ didn’t steal anything but yes, of course, the teachings of Christianity were influenced by those who came before them. Horus, Dionysus, Attis, etc there are numerous examples of the harvest god sacrificied and consumed, and yes most are born of virgins. However, just like all pursuits, the ideas grow and build over time. Jesus is an updated, improved version of the savior archetype. His salvation is for all people, not just select groups, and his weapon is compassion. Calling Jesus a ripoff or Christianity is like saying Einstein stole everything from Newton.

What if these precedents to Christ were the devil’s way of trying to distort the truth about the Christ? Additionally, maybe they were allowed by God so that when the true Christ came on the scene people would find it easier to believe given they already held similar beliefs. I’ve heard this hypothesis before, but I don’t think the connection is very strong. Resurrection, eternal life, and the ability to provide abundant food are common themes among the gods of various cultures. It is certainly possible that the Hebrews incorporated some of the Egyptian mythos into their own oral traditions, which then became the Old Testament, which of course was the inspiration for Jesus, but any more solid connection is probably bunk. And Isis, Horus’ mother, was most definitely not a virgin. Horus’ father, Osiris was the more famous of the two when it comes to self-resurrection. Plus, Horus was an instrument of revenge against Set. Hardly similar to the story of Jesus.
