common colds, and the flu are caused by a virus and thus can’t be treated by antibiotics they just have to run their course. Bronchitis is usually caused by a virus in most cases, but can progress to a bacterial infection from the excess build up of mucous, and in that case you will need antibiotics. Most cold/flu symptoms take about 2 wks to go away, so most doctors will wait to give antibiotics if your symptoms haven’t improved by the end of 2 wks (because of MRSA and all that). However, with the color of the sputum you described, and the shortness of breath, I think it is time you go see your doctor. You may also want to try an expectorant like mucinex, this will help you to get rid of the mucous, just be sure to drink at least 1 glass of water with it to help thin the secretions. Be sure to stay hydrated anyway, as you also said you are having diarrhea.
