Does it hurt a computer to be (properly) shut down every day (versus hibernation)??

It is perfectly safe to shut-down a computer at night, or use hibernation. It is not safe to use “standby” mode. Hibernation is the same thing as shutting down only it stores the last state of the computer to your hard drive and powers off completely. So even with hibernation your computer would be safe. Standby is different. With standby the computer is still turned on, only in a low-power mode while your last state is stored in memory (RAM). But while in this mode, there is still a small amount of power to some of the components. When the power goes out, a surge could hurt your computer if it’s only in standby and not properly shutdown or in hibernation. As always be extra safe and make sure your computer is plugged into a surge protector and that the surge protector itself is plugged into a properly grounded outlet. An alternative if you are very concerned about this (recommended, but not required), is to buy a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) which is basically a surge protector wi
