Cord blood has special cells called “stem cells” that can save lives. These stem cells can be used to treat diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, or other disorders of the blood. How is this special blood collected? After your baby is born, the leftover blood is drained from the umbilical cord and placenta. Then the blood is frozen for storage until needed.
