Does Islam permit an unmarried girl to live away from home for purposes of studying?
Answer Asalaam Alaikum, Islam does permit an unmarried girl to live away from home for the purposes of studying. In the modern age there are many accommodations made to make this permissible and available with single sex dormitories and schools, and activities that keep girls chaste. When a girl lives away at school, the school acts as the girl’s guardian and thus protects her from the vices around her and keeps her reputation. An educated woman in Islam is highly valued. I knew of many young women living abroad to study at the Azhar or other institutions of learning and I have a friend who was just visiting here from Baghdad University. She was unmarried, but very religious, and came here to study.
