Friis S ; Larsen TK Avdeling for forskning og undervisning Psykiatrisk divisjon UllevĂ„l universitetssykehus 0407 Oslo. svein.friis@psykiatri.uio.no Psychotherapy of schizophrenia has caused considerable debate. In 1990 prominent researchers proposed “a moratorium” on such treatment. It is now generally accepted that neuroleptic drugs cannot eliminate the need for comprehensive training in practical and social skills in patients with schizophrenia and that most patients need help to acknowledge, bear and put into perspective actual emotions and life events. Psychotherapy cannot replace treatment with neuroleptics, but neuroleptics alone will remain insufficient. These patients need integrated, comprehensive treatment programmes.
