Does HTHI offer AP and honors courses to help with college entrance?
All HTH schools do not offer AP courses, as the pedagogy required to make it through the exhaustive list of content standards goes against our desire for students to explore topics in-depth and develop understanding of the bigger picture. The curriculum provided by AP courses is generally “an inch deep and a mile wide” therefore we choose to emphasize deep, project-based work over superficial “content coverage.” Because AP courses do not greatly affect college entrance, this is not our focus at HTHI. If students do not take AP courses that are being offered at their school, it can actually adversely affect the strength of their application. Unfortunately, the enrollment in AP classes at traditional, public schools correlates strongly with such factors as socio-economic status, ethnicity, education level of parents, etc. We choose not to perpetuate the status quo by creating these divisions in our school.
