Does home insurance cover personal property damaged while traveling?

0

A basic Home Insurance policy covers household goods and personal property IN THE HOME for specific perils such as fire, theft, storm etc. You can add on Accidental Damage cover to them AND you can add on cover AWAY FROM THE HOME for personal property for specific perils and accidental damage and loss. Obviously to add this cover you pay extra so you will need to check your policy schedule to see if you took that cover out. It’s often called All Risks or Personal Possessions cover. Good luck.

Homeowners insurance does cover personal property away from the residence premises. However, contents coverage is usually named peril. That means the cause of damage has to be specifically listed in the policy. I suggest you speak to your agent before filing any claims. A lot will depend on what policy form you purchased and the language in that policy. Since we don’t have access to that information, we can’t tell you if it’s covered or not. But your agent will be able to give you some guidance and help you decide if you should file a claim. Also – your deductible will apply.
