Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb completed the Boston Marathon in 1966, 1967, and 1968, but recognition of her achievements has been scant and belated. Apparently she was supposed to be lauded in the “Spirit of the Marathon” movie as “The First Woman To Run Boston” – but she was edited out of the film’s final version. A private person and a questing spirit (spiritual quester?), Roberta Gibb began running in an era when no women’s race of longer than 800 meters was officially sanctioned by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union).
