Does HIPAA regulate how PHI created in the course of a research study is handled?
Clinical treatment performed in the course of a clinical research study must be handled in accord with the appropriate medical practices regarding entry of the individual’s treatment data into the medical record. The research use of the information must be disclosed and authorized in the authorization and informed consent documents that the research participant signs.
