Does HCV coinfection influence HIV vertical transmission?
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether coinfection with hepatitis C virus in HIV infected mothers, modifies the risk of HIV vertical transmission. METHODS: One hundred newborns (NB) from HIV infected mothers are evaluated. All NB were prospectively followed every two months. Women and NB were tested for HIV Ab (ELISA and WB), HIV Ag (EIA p24, Abbott) and HCV [ELISA (c-100-3 and c200-c22), and RIBA, Ortho]. First group includes 15 NB from HCV negative mothers (all were heterosexually infected) and second group includes 85 NB from HCV + mothers (all IVDU). RESULTS: Both groups were comparable with regards to maternal age and length of followup of the babies. Vertical transmission rate was significantly higher among HCV non infected mothers (46.6% vs 15.6%, p less than 0.05). CONCLUSION: In our series HCV infected mothers have a lower HIV vertical transmission rate than HCV non infected mothers.
