Does haylage affect a horses behaviour?
People get confused between silage and haylage. You can feed haylage to horses but you should not feed silage. Hay, haylage and silage are all made from cut grass. We make all three for feeding to both cows and horses. Silage is usually cut and baled or picked up the same day so the grass is very rich and juicy – this should not be fed to horses as it can cause all sorts of problems in the gut as they have a completely different digestive system to cows. Haylage is basically left to dry for a few days and then baled and wrapped the same day, it is usually baled a day or so earlier than it would be for hay and therefore keeps a little moisture but should not be very wet, this keeps the dust down. Hay is left out to completely dry out and then baled and stored open so that it continues to dry out. Haylage would have a higher feed value than hay, purely because it is not dried quite so much. My preference is to feed good hay to my horses but occasionally I do give them haylage if the weat
