Today’s acceptance of people with disabilities is a positive improvement from the days of old when people with disabilities were kept hidden from other people in basements and institutions. As our typical children grow and become functioning members of soceity, they will have the opportunity to interact with people of all kinds of abilities! Just because someone has a disability doesn’t mean they are not a good example for typical children. And just because someone does not have a disability doesn’t mean their behavior is perfect, either! In fact, in our experience, typical children gain many positive character traits when attending school with children with disabilities. Among them are compassion, tolerance, helpfulness, kindness, self-control and sharing. Children also learn from the negative behaviors of others as they watch how their highly skilled and trained teachers react to and deal with the behaviors.
