Qualifications like the CFA and CAIA are very useful for getting the “first look” from an employer. If you are looking for a junior level entry position, very useful. That said, CFA is more useful for “stock picking” and CAIA is more geared towards “alternative investment or fund picking”. Thus, if you are looking to become an equity research analyst, the CAIA will not add to your chances. But if you are seeking a position in Fund of Funds, the CAIA may come in handy. For more senior positions, the overriding factor will be your experience rather than your qualifications. Having sat for both exams, I can safely say that the CFA was more challenging and required more time commitment. I wouldn’t say the CAIA was easy by any means, but the volume of material was much less. A nice thing about the CAIA is that you can pass both levels in 1 year.
