Does having a wheeled bin make a difference to recycling rates?
Having a container restricts the volume of waste for disposal, which in turn reduces the waste sent to landfill and the associated costs. Residents are more likely to recycle as a result. In Birmingham, wheeled bins cut waste by 15% and in Barking and Dagenham 15% less waste was sent to landfill and recycling rates doubled. All of the top recycling local authorities have wheeled bins and different collection frequencies.
