Does harvesting the colostrum harm the newborn calves?
Cows are not wild animals. They have been especially bred to produce copious amounts of milk, much more than needed to feed their young. This is true of colostrum as well. The calves feed first and then the colostrum is garnered. This is true for both the first and second milkings in the first 24 hours, which are the only times we harvest.
