Does Green Design Work on Roadways?
The short answer is “yes.” Two years of monitoring show that a Street Edge Alternatives (SEA) Street in Seattle has reduced the total volume of stormwater leaving the street by 98 percent for a two-year storm event. The pilot SEA Street is designed to provide drainage that more closely mimics the natural landscape prior to development than traditional piped systems. Impervious surfaces were reduced to 11 percent less than a traditional street, providing surface detention in swales, and adding more than 100 evergreen trees and 1,100 shrubs. Many credits in the Built Green Communities Checklist award points for reducing and treating stormwater with such methods. Green Roofs Read about our members’ involvement in buildings taking root!
