2 Goldfish need at least a 20 gallon tank with a fitted lid & a powerful filter. Anything less then you will not only have water quality issues but territorial ones as well. I’m sorry to hear you lost your new fish but you really should have done some homework before taking on the additional responsibility. Your original Goldfish didn’t ‘kill’ the newcomer intentionally as they as peace loving creatures-any amount of other factors including water quality & tank size will have affected this. Ideally Goldfish do best with other Goldfish of similar size & type.

Some species of goldfish are more aggressive than others and should not be mixed. Celestials, bubble eyes, ranchu and lionheads all have bred deformities and limited swimming ability and are extremely declicate and should never be mixed with other breeds. Then you have telescopes and black moors. These are a little more delicate than some fancy breeds because of their protruding eyes. They may not get to food fast enough and I prefer to keep these guys together. However, they can be mixed with the next group with caution. Orandas, pearlscales, fantails, ryukin and sometimes telescopes get along just fine. These are my favorite group of goldies, are very hardy and mild mannered. Then you have comets, shubunkins and koi. These are really pond fish and need either a large pond or a gigantic indoor tank.
