Does Gastric Bypass Cure Type 2 Diabetes?
My mom and dad were both type 2 diabetics. My brother is also a type 2 diabetic, and one would assume that I had a 100 percent chance of developing diabetes also. Let’s face it; I was fat and over 40, and as I learned as a nurse, there was something we could almost assuredly look forward to if we were fat and over 40. We could expect that we might develop type 2 diabetes. Well, I never did develop either one of these diseases, but as I approached 400 pounds I became what is called a pre-diabetic. My doctor put me on medication to keep my blood sugars within normal limits. In 2001 I had the gastric bypass and over the course of 18 months I lost 140 pounds. Almost as soon as I had the bypass my blood sugars were no longer in the higher ranges of what I would call normal. My blood sugars used to run about 120 – 125, and now that I have had the gastric bypass my blood sugars have never gone over 80.
