Does food combining work?
Yes, food combining diets are bunkum. They operate on the idea that because protein needs an acid environment and carbs an alkali environment for digestion, that if you don’t eat them separately, they don’t get properly digested. It’s complete rubbish, because protein and carbs don’t get digested in the same part of the body in the first place. The acidic stomach is where the protein gets digested, the alkaline small intestine is where carbs are digested. Eating fruit is better before rather than after a meal, because the last thing you eat will be sitting in the tummy waiting for the stuff it’s sitting on top of that you ate earlier to get digested. It’s not really a problem if you just have small snacks, but if you have a proper meal then fruit after, the chances are you will get some fermentation. The bigger the meal before the fruit, the longer the fruit is going to sit there.
