The FLO Fair Trade standards encourage producer co-operatives to make environmental protection an important part of farm management. They also encourage farmers to minimize the use of fertilizers and pesticides, gradually replacing them with organic and biological farming methods. An important benefit of the higher Fair Trade price is that investment can be made by the cooperative to train farmers in organic farming techniques.
