Does expensive wine actually taste better than cheap wine?

Because of the price of producing and bottling, I would say that the average bottle of wine at £5.00 is much better than the average bottle at £2.00 After that, I think a lot is down to personal taste and preference with a lot of snobbery value involved. I lived in France for a while and went to several wine tasting event where the bottles had been disguised with black paper and people voted on the best. Both the points awarded and the winner rarely went to the most expensive. On one occasion when someone brought a South American bottle which came way out in front on all the voting though almost caused a riot when it was revealed as winner. The French have little respect for the wine of any other nation at any price.
