Does every product need to be tested by british standards?
The The British Standards Institution does not test products, but publishes standards (documents) which define product characteristics and tests etc. If you wanted to claim compliance with a standard you would probably need to arrange for a lab to test your table, or write up an analysis showing stength calculations or whatever. There are some standards which are legally required, for instance those for electrical products or safety related such as the regulations on foam filled furniture. Assuming your table has no padding and no built in light then there is probably no required standards. There is a draft standard that is relevant: BS EN 12521. Furniture.
