chain manufacturers basically state that the maintenance schedule is every three hundred miles the chain should be cleaned with kerosene and lubricated with a suitable chain lube ie heavy oil. on the lowside of the chains travel between sprockets, right in the middle, the play (amount you can move it up and down) should be between 20 and 30mm. without proper maintanance then the wear your experiening could be considered normal.
