Does Enerkems technology have an impact on the environment?
Yes – a positive impact. Enerkem’s technology converts the non-recyclable portion of our solid urban wastes into transportation fuels. Forestry and agricultural residues can also be used. The technology is complementary to traditional recycling and composting: it uses only the end-waste that would otherwise be land-filled, and it converts it to liquid fuel for our cars. Each tonne of end-waste (on a dry basis) produces 360 litres of ethanol, which is enough fuel to travel approximately 2,500 kilometres by car or the driving distance between Winnipeg and Montreal or Los Angeles and Houston. The Enerkem process turns our trash into fuel that replaces petroleum, which is a good thing for the environment. The Enerkem technology also reduces greenhouse gases by using materials that would decompose into methane if land-filled. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more harmful than CO2. Enerkem’s process entirely eliminates the production of methane gas. According to an independent li
