Does EFILive V4 work with a USB to Serial adapter?
No. EFILive V4 communicates with OBDI PCMs using GM’s ALDL protocol. That protocol is very similar to the standard serial protocol as used by your PC. The main difference is the baud rate used by GM’s PCMs is set at 8192 bps (bit per second). Most desktop PC’s (and some laptops) are fitted with a UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter) that can be programmed to support almost any baud rate. EFILive programs the UART in the PC to 8200 baud rate which is close enough to 8192 to operate within specified tolerances. USB to serial converters only support the standard baud rates of: 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200 and 230400 bps. Neither 9600 nor 19200 are close enough to 8192 bps to correctly support GM’s ALDL protocol.
