Does eating wholegrain foods lower cancer risk?
Bowel cancer is currently the most common cancer in Australia, affecting more than 11,000 people annually. Studies have shown that people who eat wholegrain foods regularly are less likely to develop bowel cancer. Some protection from wholegrains is also found against stomach cancer, although the evidence is less clear. At this stage we do not have enough information to know whether phytoestrogens found in wholegrains protects against breast and prostate cancers.
