Does Doxycycline work the same as Tetracycline?
Oral antibiotics are used in conjunction with other acne medications for moderate to severe cases of acne. Both tetracycline and doxycycline are among the list if antibiotics used for this purpose. While doxycycline and tetracycline are similar, there are some differences. Doxycycline is less apt to be disabled by the presence of certain minerals such as calcium, and can be taken with food, while tetracycline must be taken on an empty stomach to be effective. Doxycycline can be taken once or twice a day, while tetracycline should be taken two to four times a day. Both are quite inexpensive, but tetracycline is the least expensive of the two. Doxycycline causes photosensitivity in from 3% to 10% of people using it, while tetracycline causes less of this side effect. Tetracycline has a greater tendency than doxycycline to cause vaginal yeast infections in women. Doxycycline is preferred over tetracycline for patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency.
