Does Down syndrome affect a babys health?
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that occurs once in every 700 births. While most individuals have 23 pairs of chromosomes, a person with Down syndrome, or Trisomy 21 as it is sometimes called, has an extra 21 chromosome. It is the most common genetic cause of mental retardation. Most children with this disorder function intellectually, in the mild to moderately disabled range.
