Using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial design, Tariot et al (Am J Geriatr Psychiatry. 2005;13(11):9429) assessed the efficacy and safety of divalproex sodium for the treatment of agitation associated with dementia. 153 nursing home residents were recruited with 72% completing the study. A mean dose of 800mg/day was used over the six weeks of the trial. Overall they found no benefit of divalproex sodium for treatment for agitation, leading the authors to conclude that the results do not support findings from previous trials indicating possible benefits.
