Does cropping a picture with a high megapixel camera equal out having a lower optical zoom?

I’m no expert but I would imagine so. If you take a picture with a high megapixel camera you will capture x number of pixels of the image. If you then take the same picture with a lower megapixel camera, you lose a proportion of the pixels throughout the image, so using an potical zoom would allow you to increase the number of pixels available for that part of the image, compensating for the lower number of total pixels in the image. However, obviously if you then wanted a copy of the picture with the surroundings also included, the megapixel camera would work better. Plus the ability to zoom with the larger camera would allow you to to take the whole image at a good resolution, crop to concentrate on one area of the same image, and zoom in to provide images with excellent definition even in close up. If you are buying cameras the megapixels are one of the most important factors to consider I would think. Also, be wary of cameras that give a good zoom range but with little optical zoom
