Does counseling by a primary care clinician increase sun protective behaviors?
For questions 1 to 4, we searched MEDLINE® combining the MeSH® term “melanoma” (with the subheadings “prevention & control,” “epidemiology,” “etiology,” or “genetics”) together with the terms “sun exposure,” “sunscreening agents” (subheadings: “adverse effect,” “therapeutic use,” and “toxicity”), or “tanning.” This combination of terms was then limited to human studies published in English. This search identified 172 citations. In addition, to identify systematic reviews related to questions 1 to 4, we searched Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and ACP Journal Club using the terms “skin cancer,” “melanoma,” “basal cell carcinoma,” and “squamous cell carcinoma.” This search returned 70 citations.
