Does constant use of oral and inhaled steroids affect the brain function?
Answer Hi Ann Marie, Steroids, specifically oral steroids like prednisone, are very very powerful drugs. They are usually quite effective in the treatment of asthma, but along with that comes the long list of side effects. I don’t know of any research that suggests that use affects brain function, but some side effects can be serious. This is common with Prednisone and rare with inhaled steroids. The only new treatment that I am aware of is something called the Novolizer. This is a multidose, breath-actuated, dry powder inhaler. Currently it is used with albuterol and budesonide. Considering the length of time you have had asthma, you have probably tried many types of medication but I found budesonide to be particularly helpful in breaking my steroid-dependent asthma. If you haven’t tried this before, it might be worth a shot. I have never tried the Novolizer, but it sounds to be a fairly effective option. I’m not sure if doctors are prescribing this yet or not but it may be an option
