Does component video carry audio signals as well as video signals?
Component video carries only an analogue video signal, no audio. In spite of what many people think, the three video lines do not carry the three primary colours (RGB: red, green, blue). A component video signal is made up of: – Green: the “Y” or luminance channel, which transmits the image brightness information. This channel also includes the image synchronization signal. A monochrome image requires only the luminance. – Red: the “Pr” channel, which transmits contains the difference between the red and luminance signals. – Blue: the “Pb” channel, which transmits the difference between the blue and luminance signals. Adding and subtracting these channels in various combinations will allow the extraction of individual R, G, or B signals.
