Does communicating online lead to more misunderstandings than face-to-face contact?

I believe that it does, because a lot of words are understood correctly because of the hand gestures, tone of the voice and facial expressions which aren’t shown online. Although you see a good deal of misunderstandings between people when someone sucks at sarcasm and the other person takes offense, or the other is a little quick to jump to conclusions. Also, due to your appearance/reputation/age/gender people may assume that your words mean a totally different thing to what they would understand them as if someone else said it. These things aren’t always shown online.
