Does Chris Coste Signing Mean No Bengie Molina for Mets?
BY MICHAEL GANCI EDITOR Last night, when I shared with my dad the news about the Mets bringing Chris Coste aboard, he said something that made me a bit nauseous. He said, “I know why they signed Coste. In case they don’t sign Bengie Molina, he is going to be paired up with Omir Santos next season.” I very much disagree with that sentiment. He was brought on for depth, and that should be all. Coste was a nice player once, but there’s a reason why the Phillies designated him for assignment and the Astros didn’t play him much. His bat has quickly declined, and his glove is nothing to brag about. He is this year’s Robinson Cancel. I don’t expect him to be a major contributor, although it wouldn’t surprise me to see him get some time with the big club. The Mets might be comfortable carrying three catchers, so that’s where Coste might get the shot. Also, if Santos or whoever the other catcher is gets hurt, he would obviously get the call as well. The Mets are going to continue their pursuit
