Does CHEA have authority over accreditors?
Watkins: CHEA reviews accrediting organizations against the CHEA eligibility requirements and recognition standards. Those found to meet the standards are identified as recognized by CHEA. The United States Department of Education also reviews accrediting organizations against the criteria laid out in the Higher Education Act. The two reviews are independent of each other and serve different purposes. According to CHEA, in December 2002: 56 accreditors were recognized by USDE 58 accreditors were recognized by CHEA or undergoing a CHEA recognition review 36 of these accreditors were both USDE- and CHEA-recognized or undergoing a CHEA review. One is quality assurance, which demonstrates to external interests, that the accreditation association is doing what they are supposed to be doing.
