When you read the course descriptions required for certification, both by ISO and ASNT, they cover the theory, and they cover the standard fault conditions, but they do not provide any way to teach/challenge the student with real world situations, or explain the field test procedures required to verify some of the fault conditions. And there is certainly no way to test your ability to actually solve machine faults as part of the certification process. The exams are all multiple choice questions with simplified spectra to review. Unfortunately, conventional training and examination can be a better measure of a persons ability to remember facts and figures, not their ability to be a vibration analyst.
