Yesterday, the classic TV game show “The Newlywed Game” featured the first gay married couple on the show since its 1966 premier. Now hosted by Carnie Wilson, the show last night had George Takei (Mr. Sulu of the original Star Trek series) and recent husband Brad Altman. The couple hopes that their appearance the appearance of other gay couples on the show will help to “normalize” same sex marriages for Americans – most of whom live in states where such unions are not legally recognized. Takei said about their appearance: “Proposition 8 was passed in California, and there’s a whole group of people who cannot enjoy what we’re enjoying. And to get on The Newlywed Game hopefully will demonstrate to many of those decent, fair-minded people out there, that our wedding is not unlike all the others.” Ironically, Takei and Altman have been together for over 21 years, far longer than most of the straight couples that have appeared on the show.
