Does Canada subsidize post-secondary education?

0

Yes, most of our large Colleges and Universities are subsidized. In Manitoba, our tuition fees run about 3500-4000 $ for a full year with a full course load. About 70% of the University’s operating budget comes from the government. So if they didn’t get that money, it would translate into tuition fees of about $12,000 per year. Of course the rates are different for different provinces, but all of our larger and more prestigious post-secondary institutions are subsidized. If you want to attend community or trade college, you’ll probably wind up paying more, as the Government gives them less subsidies. And we do have some smaller, private institutions which the Government doesn’t fund at all, these would have much higher tuition. Also, Government student loans are much easier to get, as are government grants for students from low income families. Although if you are not a Canadian Citizen and are thinking of attending University here, you’ll usually have to pay a “differentiation fee”. S
