Does caffeine affect weight loss?
Caffeine is a stimulant so it does several things that help with weight loss. First it is an appetite surpressant, so you likely eat less similar to how people can do nothing in the morning but drink coffee. Second, as a stimulant you will likely be more active than without it, think of shivering when you are cold. Finally, it will also increase your heart rate and that has a thermogenic effect because the warm blood will move faster, cool and return to the heart where it will warm again and it takes calories to warm that blood again. This is questionable. There ARE a few studies that suggest caffeine may cause blood sugar to rise, with consequent effect on insulin. Many low carbers continue to enjoy caffeine-containing beverages with no serious impact on their weight-loss efforts. However, there are some sensitive individuals and persons who are extremely insulin resistant who may need to restrict or even eliminate all caffeine. If you are having trouble losing weight on a carbohydrate controlled diet, you might consider stopping all caffeine for a while to see if it is an issue for you.
