Does Britain really need a monarchy in this modern day of age?
We actually pay something small like 1p per year each towards the monarchy. For this you have many of prominant royals (like Anne, Charles, William) highlighting so many charities, helping them to gather more money for their cause. Also as an amassador to our country, The Queen is one of the most highly regarded Heads of State in the world. She has much better relations with other countries than our Government does. As well as that, we thrive on tourism. People love coming over here to see old castles and palaces and one of the main pulls, is that some of them are still used by royalty. I would like to see the cousins, uncles, nephews etc being given the push as far as giving them money is concerned, but I really do believe the main royal family is well worth the money we spend on them.
The lack of a monarchy would have a detrimental impact on society from a prosperity and employment point of view. Behind the scenes they are heavily involved in promoting the UK in business and investment circles and carry a lot of credibility and “pack a big punch” in that area. They are not just going on glorified holidays when you see them visiting various parts of the world. There are of course the obvious tourism benefits too, which brings in a lot of foreign cash to the country. Although their significance in the running of the country has all but gone I believe they still generate a net benefit to the nation.
Let me quote British author Tina Brown: “…there has never been a serious appetite among the British people for replacing the monarchy, however flawed, with a regime fronted by some official in a business suit. They tried a version of it after beheading Charles I and nobody much liked it then. For most Britons, the Crown is the golden thread that connects the people to the most glorious moments of their history, exercising a force for stability in an otherwise bewilderingly changing world.” I come from a republic;I don’t think that Britons would really like this style of government. The UK already elects the Prime Minister and Parliamentary officials. Why get rid of something that makes your country special?Change just for the sake of change is not a good thing, nor is it wise.
Well, they contribute significantly to tourism. Many of the most important tourist attractions belong to the Royal Family and if we were to become a republic, they would probably cease to be available to the public. Also, British as a whole love the monarchy. It is part of what, in my opinion, makes us British. Even in 1994, the lowest recorded approval rate for the Queen ever, she had a rating of 80% approval – far higher than nearly any other head of state or government. The senior members of the family, including the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York and the Princess Royal perform hundreds of activities a year – the Queen attends events nearly every day. They are our representatives, our head of state. Furthermore, I believe that they are politically useful – the Queen meets with the PM once a week to advise him, and has done so since Winston Churchill was PM. She has seen 10 PM’s come and go, and has far more experience than most of the minister if
